What is an infographic?

An infographic in the most basic sense is just a visual representation of information or ideas. The use of infographics dates all the way back to the cave drawings done by primitive humans as a way to communicate and share ideas without language. Although language and communication have evolved since then the need for visuals to explain information has never been more imperative. The increased amount of complex and interconnected knowledge in today's world is driving the evolution of information design. This driving force has generated an increased awareness of infographics and in the past few years made them popular in the design and marketing world as a form of new media.

Infographics have evolved from a basic form of communication when words were scarce into a framework for knowledge when words alone are no longer sufficient.

Infographics leverage both the left and right side of the brain by combining powerful visuals with thought provoking information and statistics. This combination allows complex information to be thoroughly explained and more easily comprehended at the same time. When done correctly, the result is a clear explanation that is universally recognized and profoundly understood.

Step 1: Discovery and Planning
  • This is a huge part of every infographic project and is where we dig deep to understand the information and core thought behind the message. It's also where we define your target audience and how your message is relevant to them and appeals to their unique needs. We research the topic to gain a thorough understanding of the information and how it makes an impact on the viewer. After understanding both the information and audience we define the style and tone that will most effectively engage and move the viewer.

Step 2: Visualization and Design
  • This is where we put our research into practice; combining information and statistics with color, typography, and graphics. We gather all of the data and decide what will be the most powerful in the form of charts, diagrams and graphs. We also create a clear timeline or journey for the viewer that will guide them through the information. To make the message resonate with the viewer we look for ways to incorporate them as part of the journey and define where they fit in with the information.

Step 3: Evaluation and Refinement
  • After we have an outline and design for the information we step into the viewers shoes and role play their journey through the information. This is where we fine tune the information and look for any missed steps or loss of consistency. We adjust any inefficiencies in the communication and make sure every pixel aligns with your message and goals.
